Adkins was raised by a single mother in several working-class areas of London. Adkins loved listening to modern pop music as a child and also learning how to play the clarinet as well as the guitar. It wasn't until her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a rhythm-and-blues performer, as well as other artists in the late 20th century that she started to think about a career in the field of music. She was attending an elementary school for performing and visual arts that was funded by the federal government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins composed on Myspace. Her work was quickly discovered by record labels and signed a contract with XL Recordings in 2006.
